This Exercise will help you to identify what is important to your target audience right!
In this blog post I’m sharing with you a different approach to audience research that will help you to connect with your ideal customers in a deeper way.
Understanding your audience will lead you to the promised land. - Jubril Agoro
Here’s a simple version of this concept.
Target audience Examplene
My example:
Last 7 days, I listened to 2 podcasts about achieving goals.
I watched a video training about creating a vision for the next 5 years.
What does this behaviour say about me?
Right now, I am super interested in learning how to set and achieve goals.
How about you?
You don’t need to guess it, just look at your online activity and you will see what is important to you right now.
How this idea was born
I had this idea while running in the park.
To understand what is important to your target audience, you will need to reverse engineer their online behaviour for the last 7 days and imagine what filled their thoughts, what they searched on Google and who had the most impact on them.
This is not your normal customer avatar exercise!
There’s an app called Hotjar that does something similar.
Hotjar tracks visitors' activity on a webpage.
My idea was to imagine all that a potential client did online in the last 7 days.
How do you do that?
By asking and asking questions related to your target audience online behaviour.
Google Searches
What questions did they ask on Google Search?
Which keywords did they use to search on Google?
Which links on the first page of Google did they click and why?
Podcasts
How many podcasts episodes did they listen to?
What were the podcasts about?
How did they feel after listening to those episodes?
Who were the hosts and why do they like to listen to them?
YouTube
What videos did they watch on YouTube?
Terms or words they used to search for those videos?
In the last 7 days, what type of IG posts they
interacted the most with and why?
What type of content do they enjoy the most on IG?
Did they comment on any of the IG posts?
Facebook Ads
What Facebook ads did they click to get the Free PDF or training?
What were the ads about?
What made them click and download the Freebie?
Emails
Did they open your emails during the week?
They did click on your links on the email?
Conclusion
This exercise is not easy to do because it requires us to think and imagine our audience's online activity.
By doing this exercise, you will be able to identify 1-3 things you can create content around to attract people interested in what you offer.
This exercise is not to be done in a rush, you are meant to put yourself in the shoes of your potential client and think like them, feel like them and speak like them.
Take a pen and paper and do this exercise to identify what is important to you right now.
